Some heads up for High School leavers.
My name is Tariromunashe Mufunde. I am currently studying Civil Engineering at the University of Cape Town. l went to Houghton Park Primary School,Northwood Adventist Primary School and finished at Greystone Park Primary School. For my high school I went to Arundel till As-level and completed my A-levels home schooling. For my A-levels I selected Maths, Physics and Accounts. I chose the awkward combination because I could not take pure sciences as I did not like biology and Chemistry and also I was still a bit confused on whether to join the cooperate world or engineering world, hence accounts and physics respectively. So in that light for university I actually applied for Civil engineering and Actuarial science. As stated above I ended up selecting civil engineering.
I am quite passionate about young people like myself specifically because we can relate on more or less the same level and also because we are the future. With this in mind I’m very much interested in career guidance and life decisions because they make us who we are tomorrow. I realised the importance of career guidance in my last few years at Arundel. After my O-level exams Arundel gave us the opportunity to do a 2-week internship at any company in the field we were each interested to pursue, and this made me realize that Actuarial science was really not my thing and this made decision making at university level slightly easier because I was well informed on the two programmes. So I strongly believe it’s good to research on what you are interested in and passionate about when selecting a career because its part of what will make you a certain person in life.
Through out my high school and university life I have learnt the importance of time keeping and separating school life and social life.So one basically needs to have priorities in life. You reach a point in. life where no one makes important decisions for you because it’s you who makes your life what you want it to be. And if you are a Christian like myself, you should secure a relationship with God, have your personal devotions, go to church become friends with God as you grow. This way your decisions will be in the right direction, because you will be exposed to some temptations that you can easily fall into and they can totally change your life in a negative direction.
